In 1952 Willys-Overland launched a much modified military Jeep which the armed forces standardized as M38A1.Two years later a civilian variant (CJ5) followed, of which a militarized version (CJ5M) was later made for MAP recipients as M606A2 and A3.In 1954 a stretched version (101-in.wb) of the MD was introduced. Known as the MDDA this was used mainly for M170 field ambulances. Its civilian counterpart was the CJ6 (from 1955).The MD was also made in Canada and Netherlands. US production exceeded 100000.
